Simbi
ink on paper
ca. 29,7cmx42cm each
Simbi are said to be spirits connected to the water,
deities of the rainfall, the marshes, the currents of the rivers.
They live between the realms of the physical world and the spirit world, of the living and the dead, and can appear in different shapes. In the shape of a snake, of a human, of a tree, of a calabash plant, even of a spark of fire.
Reports from plantations tell of children being abducted by simbi when walking close to waters at night.
After years of servitude in the underworld, the child might be released and return with a gift.
Some say that one may not speak about the encounter with the simbi,
otherwise their death might be imminent.
